Why do we have to raise awareness?

A comic titled
How often do you fill out a form that asks for gender and offers an option other than male/female or man/woman? Not only are many trans folks and communities confronted with shocking levels of discrimination, they also face invisibility and misunderstanding by a predominantly cisgender society. Some trans people do identify within the gender binary, but many identify somewhere outside of the gender binary. There is a widespread cultural ignorance of trans and/or gender non-conforming identities and experiences.
